Monday’s are always a chore for me personally. Sometimes I wake up with some energy and hit the gym… today wasn’t one of those days. Nerves about the challenge had the fingers wrapped around my brain and my stomach! Instead I decided to eat my first meal of the challenge and head in to work for an early start (and therefore early finish).
Day One, The Meals
I stuck to my original plan pretty much, so no suprises today. I chose to make rosti’s rather than roast the veg or cook them with the rice.
- Breakfast: 2 slices of homemade toast, banana spread
- Lunch: Roasted Butternut Squash & Carrot Soup, 1 slice of homemade bread
- Dinner: Carrot, swede & parsnip rosti, topped with poached eggs and served with broccoli & rice
How much did it cost?
I decided to work out how much each meal ‘cost’ based on the ingredients I bought with my £5, so here it is:
- Breakfast: 9.3p (Banana) + 2.6p (Bread)
- Lunch: 9.9p (Soup) + 1.3p (Bread)
- Dinner: 9.35p (Rosti) + 13p (Broccoli) + 20p (2 eggs) + 2p (rice)
- Total: 67.45p
Day One, The Challenges
I knew Monday would be a hard one anyway, but I underestimated how much the sight and smell of everyone around me eating would drag me down! They give away fruit and do free tea and coffee on Mondays at work – and I could take no part of the joyful stash of free caffiene or delicious fresh fruit. That sucked. Watching everybody rock up with their americanos and cappucionos sucked too! But by far the worst, and which I had sorely underestimated, was the caffiene withdrawal headache. I had no coffee on Sunday, so I was already ‘ready’ for my fix, but instead my body got tap water.
It wasn’t happy.
By 9pm my head hurt so bad I nearly cried, so I had a little impromptu nap. When I woke up again at 9.30pm, I decided to put myself to bed. Oh dear.
The second challenge I faced was a complete lack of energy – I blame this partially on the raging headache that made me feel like there was an elephant in my skull with a jack hammer and a boom box. Usually if I start work ‘early’ I head down to my gym for a post-work workout but there was no way that was going to happen. Slightly disappointed.
Still, I managed it! One day down, four to go and I’m already realising how privileged I am to be able to snack whenever I want. Eat what I want. Drink what I want…
