Oh the woes of trying to eat a primary plant-based diet. Woes include: limited chocolate choices, no more Fox’s jam creams, and no more ice-cream.
But, actually, that’s not entirely correct. There’s this secret world of non-dairy frozen delights out there that (despite it being Winter) I’ve been dipping my tiny toes into. It’s the world of dairy-free “ice-cream”.
Enter: Tesco Free From Strawberry And Vanilla Cones, which I found in their frozen section (…obviously) at my local Tesco supermarket (not sure if they’re in Express stores – let me know!) . I’ll be the first to admit I was entirely skeptical and I was also already in a bad mood, as I was supposed to be looking at the Christmas Free From range (for the Orchard program, in which I got a £5 voucher towards my adventuring) but between allergies and Vegan choices, I ended up miffed and in the frozen section, freezing my fingers off as I checked all the ingredients lists!
Ingredients of Tesco Free From Strawberry And Vanilla Cones
Water, Sugar, Maize Flour, Coconut Oil, Glucose Syrup, Lupin Protein Isolate, Strawberry Pulp (3.5%), Maltodextrin, Dextrose, Concentrated Strawberry Juice, Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithins, Mono- and Di-Glycerides of Fatty Acids), Maize Starch, Colours (Concentrated Beetroot Juice, Beta-Carotene), Stabilisers (Locust Bean Meal, Guar Gum), Salt, Palm Oil, Flavouring, Acidity Regulators (Calcium Hydroxide, Carbon Dioxide, Citric Acid), Vanilla Powder
The all important “taste test”
Lets face it, when eating something that is supposed to taste like something else many times the result is either a disappointment and/or chemical-laden mouthful of weirdness. However, that wasn’t the case with these little soy-based ice-cream-style cones (think: Cornetto) … although, actually, “little” isn’t fair because they’re quite big!
On the first bite I was pretty hooked – there’s a mixture of strawberry and vanilla ‘ice-creams’ and you sort of either get one or the other… unless you have a big bite, I suppose. Both taste like regular flavours with no chemical or bitter aftertaste, and the texture is smooth and creamy like a regular ice-cream.
I was also (even more surprisingly!) impressed with the cone. Most of the time, I take a bite of a cone and throw the remainder of my ice-cream away because it’s just not not very nice – especially those cheap wafer cones. Yuck. But, despite being described rather uninvitingly as a “gluten free maize cone” it’s actually more… waffle cone like. It tastes a bit indulgent and doesn’t crumble in your mouth as soon as your teeth hit it. It has a bite to it and sort of.. melts a little. It really adds to the overall enjoyment of the ice-cream, rather than detracting from it.
What about you?
Have any of you guys tried these, what did you think? Or do you have some any Vegan-friendly recommendations?
